The conflict in Ukraine is a “wakeup call” for countries reliant on fossil fuels, according to White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy.

“Our path now has to be clean energy that we can own, that we can deliver, that will be secure in the future for the American public,” McCarthy tells Bloomberg TV’s Francine Lacqua on the first episode of Leaders with Lacqua Goes Green, sponsored by Zurich Insurance and filmed at the Bloomberg Green Summit 2022.

Speaking about the conflict in Ukraine and reliance on Russian oil, McCarthy says: “I don’t think we should use this current situation as anything other than a wakeup call that we need to focus more and more on the development of clean energy in the United States and across the world.”

The Zurich Forest Project takes center stage

The annual gathering of climate leaders featured the Zurich Forest Project and an inspiring compilation of Zurich’s actions to help drive positive impact for our planet.

The Bloomberg Green Summit returned to New York City for a hybrid in-person and virtual event where political and business leaders gathered to talk about the urgency of climate change and what’s being done now to tackle it, as well as highlighting the actions still needed to take our planet safely into the future.

Zurich Insurance Group was a presenting sponsor of the 2022 meeting and opened the daylong event with a short video about the Zurich Forest Project.

Zurich has partnered with Brazilian non-profit Instituto Terra to help restore 700 hectares of nature in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest over eight years. The restored forest will be fully self-sustaining and biodiverse, comprising 120 species of trees native to the region. Instituto Terra was founded by photographer Sebastião Salgado and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado.
